  NEVER let them medicate your dog! Dr. Root OD'd my mom's dog - then defended what he did! When my mother's yorkie developed diarrhea and we took her here to see Dr. Root. After her evaluation and blood work, he put the 5lb yorkie on 250 mg of Metronidazole (2x/day). Six days in to her 7 day treatment she was unable to walk, eat or even stand. We took her back to Dr. Root and she was admitted to their 'hospital'. For two full days they had her, and their cure all was giving her a dog's version of valum. It never seemed to occur to them to check the dose of the medication she was given the week before. Furthermore, while in the 'hospital' they NEVER gave her any fluids or tube fed her at all. At the end of the second day, they said they would recommend putting her down tomorrow if she didn't improve. My mother, who is ill herself, was beside herself. It was all so sudden! So, we decided to take the little yorkie for a second opinion. We got the last appointment available by the new animal hospital, and before I said anything about what I thought (I only showed the new doc the medication she was given), he confirmed that the dose was enough for a dog at least 5 times her size. We finally nursed her back to health, but she nearly died. Dr. Root grossly overdosed my mother's dog, and when confronted, stood by his dosage! In his 'defense' he did say he has prescribed this for 15 years without any reaction (even though max dose I could find was 5-23mg per pound-she should've been at 115mg MAX!). Ultimately, they refunded everything we spent there.
